Technical Tour : Sabo Dam and Heritage Building

On the first day of GFDS 2024, attendees will have the opportunity to visit Sabo Dam and attend a lecture by a representative of the dam, who will also serve as one of the keynote speakers. Indonesia, prone to various disasters, drew significant lessons from the 2004 earthquake and tsunami in Aceh. Extensive measures have been taken to mitigate the impact of natural disasters. Sabo Dam stands as a tangible outcome of this ongoing journey in disaster mitigation.

The Balai Sabo Dam was built as part of Indonesia and Japan’s collaborative Sabo system, manages volcanic debris from Mount Merapi. Despite the 2010 eruption, it effectively controlled sediment. With the potential for more Sabo dams in Indonesia’s volcano-prone areas, this topic will be discussed at GFDS 2024. The workshop will cover how Sabo dams work, their technical aspects, and maintenance, guided by experts from The University of Tokyo, Gadjah Mada University, and Balai Sabo. It will take place at Gadjah Mada University’s Engineering Faculty, with a site visit to the dam area.
